TCL (T3:4-6) Media Export Formats

Media Export Formats

The following is a list of the most common media formats currently used in video production with a description of the positive and negative points for each format:

MP4: This is the most common video format for uploading to the Internet. Most MP4 files are compressed using the H.264 codec (electronic instructions for compression/decompression). The size of an MP4 file is smaller than raw video files but allows high resolution images to be recorded and carries metadata well for use online.

MOV: This is one of the higher quality formats for video layering. MOV files can be used with most video editing software. They are often larger files that cannot be played by all video players.

AVCHD: The HD (high definition) in AVCHD shows one of the top features of this video format; it creates a very good image quality.  This format is used primarily by Sony and Panasonic for Blu-Ray discs and players but does not work as well with web or social media.

MKV: This open source format is becoming more popular among video creators for the high-quality (lossless) compression and high resolution. Because it is a more recent format, it cannot yet be used with many players.

FLV: The FLV format was created by the company Adobe for Flash movie files used on websites and in gaming and web animations.  However, it does not work well with iOS devices, and the decision to stop using it on several browsers has decreased its popularity over the last year.

AVI: This used to be the top video format because it could be used for the DVD format and had good audio. However, AVI files did not compress well and offered limited aspect ratio options.
